PADANG

Kota Padang adalah kota terbesar di pesisir barat pulau Sumatera sekaligus ibu kota dari provinsi Sumatera Barat, Indonesia. Kota ini memiliki wilayah seluas 694,96 km² dengan kondisi geografi berbatasan dengan laut namun memiliki daerah perbukitan yang ketinggiannya mencapai 1.853 mdpl. Berdasarkan sensus penduduk tahun 2010, kota ini memiliki jumlah penduduk sebanyak 833.562 jiwa yang didominasi oleh etnis Minangkabau dan mayoritas masyarakat di kota ini menganut agama Islam.
Sejarah kota Padang tidak terlepas dari peranannya sebagai kawasan rantau Minangkabau, yang berawal dari perkampungan nelayan di muara Batang Arau lalu berkembang menjadi bandar pelabuhan yang ramai setelah masuknya Belanda di bawah bendera Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC). Hari jadi kota ini ditetapkan pada 7 Agustus 1669, yang merupakan hari terjadinya pergolakan masyarakat Pauh dan Koto Tangah melawan monopoli VOC. Selama penjajahan Belanda, kota ini menjadi pusat perdagangan emas, teh, kopi, dan rempah-rempah. Memasuki abad ke-20, ekspor batu bara dan semen mulai dilakukan melalui pelabuhan Teluk Bayur.
Saat ini Kota Padang menjadi pusat perekonomian karena memiliki pendapatan per kapita tertinggi di Sumatera Barat.^[4] Selain itu, kota ini juga menjadi pusat pendidikan dan kesehatan, disebabkan jumlah perguruan tinggi dan fasilitas kesehatan yang lebih banyak dibandingkan kota atau kabupaten lain di Sumatera Barat. Di kalangan masyarakat Indonesia, nama kota ini banyak dikenal sebagai sebutan lain untuk etnis Minangkabau, dan juga digunakan untuk menyebut masakan khas mereka yang umumnya dikenal sebagai Masakan Padang.^[5]

MEDAN

Kota Medan adalah ibu kota provinsi Sumatera Utara, Indonesia. Kota ini merupakan kota terbesar di Pulau Sumatera. Kota Medan merupakan pintu gerbang wilayah Indonesia bagian barat dan juga sebagai pintu gerbang bagi para wisatawan untuk menuju objek wisata Brastagi di daerah dataran tinggi Karo, objek wisata Orangutan di Bukit Lawang, Danau Toba.
